Safety Committee Meeting

January 17, 2019


The Atchison County Safety Committee met on Thursday, January 17, 2019 in the County Commission Room. Those members in attendance were Connie Ellerman, Treasurer; Jamie Madison, Human Resources; Staci Waggle, Solid Waste; Kim Pruett, Joint Communications; Joe Bowen, Maintenance; Dirk Saragusa, Jail; Melissa Smith, Human Resources; Billie Jo Moore, Treasurer; Debbie Thompson, Appraiser; Wesley Lanter, EM; Lydia Theurer, EMS; Corey Scott, EMS; Melissa Crane, Appraiser; Jack Laurie, Sheriff; Breanna Chalfant, Community Corrections; Seth Howard, Road & Bridge; and Kalee Vanderweide, County Clerk.

Minutes were recorded by Kalee Vanderweide, Secretary.

Seth Howard, Chairperson, called the meeting to order.


Minutes of December 20, 2018 Meeting – Wes Lanter motioned to approve the minutes with no corrections. Kim Pruett seconded the motion.

Follow-up Accident/Incident Reports  

EMS – Passenger with the motor vehicle accident had an MRI and is back to full duty.

Employee with the IV needle stick has tested negative. Patient involved won’t call back.


Accidents/Incident Reports

Road and Bridge – Employee went to shut the window/door of the track loader. The window/door shut faster than expected and it caught his left little finger and broke it. He is in a cast for three (3) weeks.

Employee had an incident when he bent over to pick up a bag of tire chains and hear a pop. Employee went to chiropractor on his own time.

First quarter training discussion was held with ideas of Stop the Bleed and Defensive Driving. Wes Lanter made a motion to go with Defensive Driving as the first quarter training. Seth Howard seconded.

It was discussed to add Stop the Bleed training to the Employee Training Day on Columbus Day, Monday, October 14, 2019. Miami County will be sending Stop the Bleed for free for us.

Election of Officer: 

Seth Howard made a motion to have Corey Scott be chairperson. Wes Lanter seconded. This is due to Lydia Theurer stepping down.


Meetings will be held at 9:00 am.

The question was asked whether or not to rotate members on the Safety Committee every year or two so that people don’t get burnt out.

Discussion was had that everyone on Safety Committee will sign a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) form to keep incident/accident information private. It was also discussed to include the whole courthouse, since people come to the meetings that might not be on the Committee. Kalee Vanderweide will keep track of everyone who signs the forms.

Corey Scott, Jamie Madison, and Seth Howard will meet with Travis Bennett to go over the KERIT scorecard for the County, at 1:30 pm.

The next meeting has been set for Thursday, February 21, 2019. There being no further business, Dirk Saragusa made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Wes Lanter and Seth Howard seconded the motion.
